How it started.
The Good Shepherd Food Pantry began as a small effort to feed neighbors in need across Bertie County, North Carolina — and grew into a community lifeline.
From a few boxes to a county-wide lifeline
- The beginningA handful of volunteers, a few boxes of groceries
Good Shepherd started as a simple effort by a small group of neighbors who refused to let anyone in Bertie County go hungry.
- Growing rootsFaith communities, farmers, and donors join in
Local churches, farmers, and businesses began contributing food, funds, and time — turning a small effort into a county-wide network.
- A real distribution modelFive distribution days every month
We built a consistent schedule — every second Saturday, plus the following Wednesday and Thursday — to make food access predictable for families.
- Today350,000+ pounds of food a year
In 2025 we distributed over 350,000 pounds of food to 17,852 households across Bertie County's 9 towns.
Built by neighbors, for neighbors
Every box that leaves our pantry is the work of dozens of volunteers, local farmers, faith communities, and donors. Good Shepherd belongs to Bertie County — and it only exists because the community shows up, month after month.
