Good Shepherd works alongside Access East, the NC Healthy Opportunities Pilot, and NC Medicaid Expansion to deliver healthy food and connect families to whole-person care across Bertie and Chowan Counties.
Access East
GSFP provides Healthy Food Boxes for Medicaid Managed Care members through referrals directed by the Access East Healthy Opportunities Pilot Program. Together we deliver the food side of whole-person care.

Healthy Opportunities Pilot
Good Shepherd is part of a network of human service organizations providing Healthy Food Boxes to NC Medicaid Managed Care members enrolled in the Healthy Opportunities Pilot.
Who HOP serves
- • Enrolled in an NC Medicaid Managed Care health plan
- • Live in Bertie or Chowan County
- • Have a qualifying physical or behavioral health condition plus a qualifying social need
- Help finding nutritious food
- Group nutrition classes
- Fruit & vegetable credits
- Groceries pick-up or delivery
- Medically tailored meals
- Rides to grocery, work, church
- Taxi & ride-share credits
- Vehicle repairs
- Stable long-term housing support
- Security deposit & first month rent
- Utilities, furniture, accessibility
- Post-hospitalization housing
- Parenting curriculum & in-home services
- Interpersonal violence case management

NC Medicaid Expansion
Since December 1, 2023, NC Medicaid covers people ages 19–64 with higher incomes. You may now qualify even if you didn't before — at little to no cost.
